about

While teaching at fiddle camp in 2009, word reached us—yes, even at fiddle camp—that Michael Jackson had passed away. Part of the camp teaching experience is giving a faculty performance and mine was set for the following day. A tribute seemed in order and a buddy suggested Billie Jean. Up to this point, I hadn't ever arranged a whole looping piece, only experimented with tones and layers. I went home that night and learned all the different parts of the song—bass, drums, guitar, strings, vocals—and figured out how to play them all sequentially so that by the end, the whole composition was realized.

During the same week, Les Paul also passed away. Considered by many to be the father of multi-track recording, Billie Jean became a twofold tribute.
